Compassion, Confidence And Communication

Experienced Legal Counsel For Minnesota Family Law

Dealing with a family law matter can be one of the most emotional and stressful experiences of your life. Whether you are facing a divorce, a child custody battle, or any other family law issue, the uncertainty and emotional turmoil can feel overwhelming.

My name is William A. Winter, and I am the founding attorney of Winter Law, LLC, in Orono. For over 30 years, I have dedicated my career to helping individuals and families in Minnesota navigate the complexities of family law. You can read more about my background and experience here:

Serving Minnesota Families With Family Law Needs

I know how stressful it is to be navigating a family law legal issue. Most of the time, my clients who have found themselves needing a family law attorney are in the midst of a major life transition. I want to support you in that journey and help make that transition as smooth as possible, while protecting your rights and best interests. My practice areas include:

  • Divorce: I counsel clients through all aspects of the divorce process, including property division, custody and support.
  • Child custody and parenting time: Whether you are navigating a divorce or paternity matter, I can protect your parental rights and the best interests of your children by helping you establish custody, visitation and parenting time schedules.
  • Child support: Whenever children are involved, securing the appropriate amount of support is critically important. If you are the parent relying on support, you will need to make sure your children’s needs are met. If you are the parent paying support, you will need to make sure support is set at an amount that you can reasonably sustain.
  • Spousal support: Spousal maintenance or support, also known as alimony, is often a contentious topic in a divorce case. I am well versed in case and statutory law and able to help ensure a ubiquitous result.
  • Paternity: Not all families were formally established through marriage. When parents have a child together or when couples who were never married decide to separate, I can help secure parental rights or advocate for support.
  • Adoption: I support parents and grandparents through the adoption process, no matter what their unique situation requires.

Every family is unique, and every family law case is as different as the families navigating them. No matter what your family law matter entails, I provide consistent and thorough communication throughout the entire legal process. I know that your family means everything to you. Therefore, you will always know where your case stands, and I will be there to answer your questions and address your concerns.

Reaching Settlements Through Negotiation And Mediation

In addition to traditional legal representation, I am also a trained mediator and a qualified neutral under Minnesota Rule 114. Mediation can be a valuable tool in divorce and family law cases because it allows parties to come up with workable solutions for their family together.

Mediation has several advantages. When both parties are willing to set their personal emotions and differences aside to make decisions that are in the best interests of their children and families, it can be invaluable to reaching effective resolutions. The mediation process can save you money, time and resources as compared to a lengthy court battle. It also gives you more control over the outcome, allowing you to tailor solutions to fit your family’s unique needs.

If mediation is a viable option for your case, I will work with you to facilitate productive discussions and help you reach an agreement. However, not all parties navigate family law matters in the same frame of mind. If emotions run too high, or your situation involves abuse and control issues, mediation might not be a viable option. I am always prepared to advocate for my clients’ best interests in court if mediation attempts to negotiate a settlement fail.

My Promise And Commitment To My Clients

When you work with me, you can expect consistent communication and a calm, confident approach to your case. I am committed to guiding you through this stressful process with the utmost care and attention. My goal is to help you achieve outcomes that protect your rights and reach solutions that are in the best interests of you and your family.
